Supported File Formats for File Type Detection in Data Classification

Skyhigh Data Loss Prevention analyzes the contents of files that pass from user devices to the cloud. Specific formats are supported for content analysis, and a broader set of file formats for signature-based file type detection.

Formats can be analyzed in the following ways:

  • Text Extraction. Text content is extracted from the associated file type. Many supported file types are essentially containers that can only be opened using their native applications (for example, try opening a PDF document in TextEdit). If the Text Extraction column indicates Yes, text extraction for that file type is supported.
  • Metadata. If the Metadata column indicates Yes, metadata can be extracted from file types.
  • Object Extraction. It identifies and extracts specific data objects within a dataset that may contain sensitive information. Examples include objects embedded within a Word document or files contained within an archive. If the Object Extraction column indicates Yes, object extraction for that file type is supported.
