HDD Utilization in a VM during SWG Installation
This document details the observed behavior of Hard Disk Drive (HDD) utilization during SWG installation within a virtual environment, mainly focusing on scenarios involving multiple attached hard disks of varying sizes.
HDD Utilization during SWG Installation
During SWG installation in a virtual environment, the initialization primarily utilizes only the first two attached hard disks, irrespective of the number of disks present or their sizes. This utilization pattern is consistent across different configurations of added hard disks.
Known Behavior
When installing SWG in a VM with multiple hard disks, the system exhibits the following behavior:
- First HDD Utilization: The first hard disk (HDD 1) is designated for mounting and hosting other partitions required by the SWG.
- Second HDD Utilization: The second hard disk (HDD 2) is utilized specifically for cache storage.
- Remaining HDDs: All subsequent hard disks added to the VM, beyond the first two, are left free and are not utilized during the SWG installation process.
NOTE: Irrespective of the VM environment, adding more than two hard disks will not result in additional storage or utilization by the SWG installation. However, extending the storage of existing hard disks (first and second) is possible by referring to opt Partition Expansion section.
Example
Consider the following example of HDD configurations added to a VM before SWG installation in VMware ESXi:
Two 100 GB hard disks and one 50 GB hard disk are added.
In this example, it is noticed that the third hard disk (sdc) is partitioned but not utilized.
Regardless of the combination or size of the hard disks, SWG installation only utilizes the first and second disks. The additional/remaining disk(s) remain unallocated.
